10 of the Best Coffee Lovers Subscription Boxes

If there’s one thing that has the potential to seriously dent my bank balance, its subscription boxes.  I love the idea of selecting a box and receiving a range of goodies, often without knowing exactly what is in it!

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases and sometimes recommend products from other sellers at no extra cost to you. For more details see my disclosure policy and privacy policy.

Here in the UK, subscription boxes are still a bit new.  But in the US, there’s a LOT more available.  So I thought I’d round up the best coffee lovers subscription boxes for all of us so we can satisfy that subscription box urge with coffee – or maybe even give as a gift.

What are subscription boxes?

In case you haven’t run into them before, subscription boxes is a way to get a selection of products on a theme in a single box.  You can buy them as one-off products or subscribe each month.

There are two main types:

  • Discovery boxes
  • Convenience boxes

Discovery boxes

With discovery boxes, you have a good idea of what’s coming while with others they are more of a mystery.  You’ll normally have an overview.  For instance, I have a gin subscription box and each month there will be a full-size gin, tonics, ingredients t make the cocktail of the month, a dried garnish and a selection of snacks.

They are a great way to discover new products and manufacturers as well as getting a nice surprise.

Convenience boxes

Convenience boxes are a way to get a selection of items you choose each month and not have to worry about remembering to order them.  Something like Hello Fresh or Simply Cook are examples of this – you can pick what you want or leave it to chance.

Can you buy subscription boxes as gifts?

When you use websites like Cratejoy (my new favourite place to find subscription boxes) there are options to buy as a one-off or sign up.  Plus you can also add them as a gift for someone else.

Generally, there’s an option to select it as a gift and add the recipient’s information.  It also hides the billing info so they don’t see what you spent.  You can add a message to tell them who it is from and can buy one month or a longer subscription for them.

What makes a great subscription box?

There’s no right or wrong answer for what makes a great subscription box.  If you are buying it as a gift, then you want to look for something you know the person would enjoy.  Also if you are thinking about coffee subscription boxes, think about how they make coffee – no point buying them a Keurig box if they don’t have a coffee machine!

For a treat for yourself, think about how much control you want.  Are you happy to just let the subscription box company choose for you?  Do you want to have some control, in which case look for a questionnaire style that finds out a bit about you first?  Or do you want to know what you re getting – then look for a convenience style box.

To help put this into context, let’s take a look at some of the best coffee subscription boxes and see what makes them popular.
